Every place has a sport that they absolutely go crazy for. Soccer stadiums in Brazil fill up nightly, Canada is a hub for everything hockey-related, Green Bay is covered in green and gold Packers gear, and nothing in Appleton compares to a Fox Cities Roller Derby match.
In 2007, the Fox Cities Roller Derby League was founded in the heart of Appleton, WI and has since grown to include dozens of roller derby girls. The skater-owned and operated league prides itself on inclusivity, stating that roller derby is for people of all shapes, sizes, ages, skill levels, careers, and backgrounds. All you need is a little heart and the girls will teach the rest.
What is roller derby?
Roller derby is a race held by two opposing teams made of 5 members each. The teams circle the track in a counter-clockwise fashion while sporting roller skates, a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, and a mouthguard. As you can imagine, this is a pretty intense contact sport, but all in good fun. The whole point is to have your jammer (player with a star on her helmet) lap members of the opposing team more than the opposing jammer laps members of your team. While it may sound pretty complicated, once the match starts, it all falls into place.
